It has arrived! The new yarn for the knit Channukah shawl I am determined to complete before Channukah starts.
After begging my friend to check yarn combos in person for me (thanks, Linda!), I knew this fabulous trio of colors in Madeline Tosh Vintage was going to be perfect.
First, I needed a bright creamy white. I chose Antique Lace. It reminds me of white candles and sparkling silver menorahs. Plus, now that I live in the northeast and not Texas, we typically get some snowfall around Channukah time too.
Many Channukah decorations use blue. What’s the Jewish obsession with blue? I’m not 100% sure, but I do wonder if it traces back to techielet, the original blue-ish dye used for tzitzit strings in Mishnaic times. I knew I needed some shade of blue for this project, but I wanted something that leaned a bit more into the teal end of the spectrum. A rich, robust teal that would be the perfect backdrop for bursts of Channukah light. The perfect colorway is Cousteau.
Finally, I had to choose a third color. I wanted something that captured the bright flames from lit menorahs, sparkly gold-wrapped chocolate gelt, and even the shiny-brown on a latke fresh out of the pan. Glazed Pecan was the color that spoke to me.
I’m certain that I’m going to use 2 skeins of Cousteau and 1 skein of Glazed Pecan. It remains to be seen if I need just or 2 skeins of the Antique Lace.
