Shabbat and holidays like Rosh Hashanah are steeped in tradition. You can’t celebrate a new year without Bubbe’s brisket, and that kiddush cup has probably been in the family longer than you’ve been alive.
With all the focus on history and tradition, sometimes it’s hard to feel like there’s any room in there for you. I have definitely felt that way.
You and I both know that the high holidays require a lot of actual, physical and emotional work to make happen. You want everything to go well. You want to make great memories for your kids. You want your mother-in-law to like the new chicken dish.

One way to put your own spin on the holidays is to do one thing that’s really fun for YOU and just you. I’ve seen people create boutique flower arrangements or insta-worthy tablescapes. But as a yarn person, there’s something that is much more up our alley.

Pattern 1: Knit Shabbat Challah Cover
I’ve been dreaming of making a challah cover that features the word “Shabbat” in Hebrew for longer than I can remember. It’s always been a project I wanted to tackle, but I never got around to it—until now. The design is a simple, classic rectangle, and I’ve added small wheat motifs throughout to enhance the overall look.
The PDF pattern includes written instructions, the colorwork chart, and a written version of the colorwork chart too.
Pattern 2: Crochet Honeycomb Challah Cover
Nothing says “Rosh Hashanah” like round challahs and apples dipped in honey. I wanted to create a round challah cover especially for Rosh Hashanah, but I also wanted to incorporate the theme of honey and a sweet new year.
This challah cover starts out with textured hexagons made with post stitches. They are edged with a join-as-you-go border and then stitches are worked around the whole piece to turn it into a round circle. When I was making the hexagons I really enjoyed the twists of the post stitches, but I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. This pattern has the textured hexagons but also an alternate flat hexagon pattern if you want something a bit easier to stitch. The 5 page pdf pattern includes written instructions and extensive symbol diagrams.
