I’ve just released a new crochet pattern, the Israel Crochet Applique.

2 crochet appliques shaped like israel. one is blue. the other is silver with stripes and a star like the israeli flag embroidered on it with blue yarn.

I started on this pattern as a technical challenge. I know I can crochet regular shapes – rectangles, circles, triangles, etc. I wanted to challenge myself to make something that was an irregular shape, and the state of Israel certainly fits that bill!

I used Scheepjes Catona yarn for this. This yarn was the remnants from some swatching I’ve been doing for a new challah cover knitting pattern.

I started with a printout of a map of Israel. I would crochet a few stitches at a time, holding it up to the paper to see if I was matching the shape well enough. For the first try, I started crocheting from the left edge towards the right, but I didn’t like how it was turning out. I started again, starting at the bottom and working towards the top. As I went, I sketched out a symbol diagram as “notes” for the pattern.

Once I finished the first Israel crochet applique, I made a second and embroidered the stripes and star of the Israeli flag on top.

This pattern is available on Ravelry and in my Etsy shop.
