I’m excited to offer this free crochet pattern for the 12 inch Happy Days Afghan Square. My design for this square is part of the Moogly 2019 Crochet Along.
Crocheting squares for afghans is great. It makes it easy to take your crocheting around with you. You just have to have the yarn and the current square. Your collection of completed squares can stay home.

370 yd [338 m]) per skein: 1 skein each #1207 Cornsilk (MC) and #1601 Lettuce (CC)
J/10 6mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Rnds 1–3 = 3.5 inches in diameter

Pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
Square is worked in the round beginning at the center with right side facing at all times.

Special Stitches
Cluster = [Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Bpdc (back post double crochet) = Yarn over, insert hook from back side of work to front and to back again around the post of indicated st; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] twice.
A bpdc counts as a stitch on the current row. Skip the top of the stitch you worked the bpdc around.

SQUARE
With MC, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in first st (ch-2 and dc count as as first cl), (ch 1, cluster) in each st around, ch 1, join with sl st in first dc. (12 clusterss, 12 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next ch-1 sp, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next ch-1 sp] around, join with sl st in top of first sc. Fasten off. (36 sc)
Rnd 4: Join CC in back loop of any sc, working in back loops only, ch 4 (counts as first tr), tr in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 2 tr in next st, ch 2 (ch-2 counts as corner sp), skip next st**, 2 tr in next st, repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of beg ch-4. (40 sts, 4 ch-2 sp corners)
Rnd 5: Ch 3, [dc in each st around to next corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp] 4 times, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (56 sts, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 6: Join MC in any corner sp, (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same corner sp, *[ch 1, skip next st, cluster in next st] 3 times, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, [cluster in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 3 times**, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sp, repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (24 clusters, 16 dc, 24 ch-1 sps, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 7: Join CC in any corner sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, sc in back loop of next 2 dc, [sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in back loop of next cluster] 3 times, working in front of next ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 2 skipped sts of Rnd 5 directly below, [sc in back loop of next cluster, sc in next ch-1 sp] 3 times, sc in back loop of next 2 dc, repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (80 sts, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 8: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first corner sp, *dc in each st around to next corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sp, repeat from * 2 more times, dc in each remaining st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. (96 dc, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 9: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first corner sp, *dc in each st around to next corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp, repeat from * 2 more times, dc in each remaining st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (112 dc, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 10: Join CC in any corner sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *dc in next dc, bpdc around each dc across to last dc before next corner sp, dc in next dc**, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp, repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join in top of beg ch-3. (128 dc, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 11: Ch 3, dc in next dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp**, dc in each st around to next corner sp, repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in each rem st, join in top of beg ch-3. (144 dc, 4 corner sps)
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner sp, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (156 sc)
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
Lightly block to finished measurement, if needed.
