After buying some felt flowers to make napkin rings recently, I decided to try to figure out how to make felt flowers of my own. I made some fun felt flowers with buttons. Then, I experimented and figured out how to make these! No sewing required. You just need scissors and some craft clue.
Materials for all flowers:
Felt in a variety of colors
Craft glue
Pen or pencil
Scissors
Safety pin (optional)
Flower 1: Simple Fringed Flower
Step 1: Cut a piece of felt 1 inch wide and 12 inches long.
Step 2: Cut fringe down one end of the felt strip.
You’re just making little cuts halfway down all along the full length of the strip
Step 3: Apply glue to the bottom of the fringed strip of felt. Begin rolling up the felt strip from one end to the other.
It really is just that simple!
Flower 2: Folded Fringe Flower
Step 1: Cut a piece of felt 2 inches wide and 12 inches long.
Step 2: Fold the felt in half lengthwise.
Step 3: Cut fringe down the folded edge of the felt strip.
Step 4: Apply some glue inside the folded strip to keep it shut.
Be careful not to get glue in the fringe part.
Step 5: Apply glue to the bottom of the strip of felt. Begin rolling up the felt strip from one end to the other.
Flower 3: Twisted Fringe Flower
Follow steps 1-3 of Flower 2: Folded Fringe Flower.
Step 4: Glue the solid edge together, but shift the front to the right as you do. This causes the folded fringe edge to kind of twirl.
This part is a little tricky because the felt tries to fight you. It’s worth it though; this is my favorite of all the felt flowers I made.
Step 5: Apply glue to the bottom of the strip of felt. Begin rolling up the felt strip from one end to the other.
Finishing
My local craft store was out of pin backs, so I opted for a safety pin instead. I cut a piece of green felt into a circle about the size of the bottom of the flower. I glued a small rectangle of felt over half the safety pin and onto the circle. Then, I glued the whole piece onto the bottom of my flower to make it into a broach.
Have fun making your flowers! I’d love to see pictures of your finished pieces!
