scratching puppyThere are such a wide variety of animal fiber yarns available today. Wool, alpaca, angora, mohair, yak, and bison can be found at almost any reputable yarn store. If you have sensitive skin you may be worried about having a sensitivity to these fibers. People who are sensitive or break out with wool fibers may not have the same problems with other animal fibers. How can you find out? Follow the simple steps below:

Step 1: Knit or crochet a small swatch in the suspect fiber. If this causes your hands to itch or get red, stop immediately. If you’re able to finish the swatch, proceed to step two.

Step 2: Stick the swatch in the strap of your bra, against your skin, while you go about your daily business. After an hour or so you should notice if you’re starting to feel itchy or if everything is fine.

This quick test should give you a pretty good idea about whether you are sensitive to a specific fiber.
